Apple offers several ways users can fix the iTunes Error 9006, some of which are easy and some that are a little more advanced.

If you get an error 9006 while trying to update to iOS 7 in iTunes, the first thing you can try is to close iTunes and restart the check for updates process. This is not a guaranteed fix, but it worked for several readers and Gotta Be Mobile team members. Plus it’s the easiest thing to try.

If that fails, Apple recommends turning off any third-party security software. If you have antivirus or firewall software running on the computer it could be behind the issue. Apple says uninstall it, but turning it off should suffice, at least as a first attempt.

Next up Apple says to check default packet size. Odds are most personal computers belong to users who have not modified this in the first place, so it’s ok to jump to the next step. If you wan, Apple provides directions to reset this.

Users can also log in to their router and make sure that ports 80 and ports 443 are allowed. Again, most users who haven’t made changes or who aren’t on a work network shouldn’t have to worry about this step.

Check any firewall software to make sure albert.apple.com or phobos.apple.com are not blocked. This will vary by software application.

The step that many of you will be able to do is to delete the partial iOS 7 download, which will force iTunes to restart the process. Here is where the file is located on Windows and Mac.

Windows 7 & Vista (Likely 8 as well) - C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\

Windows XP - C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\

To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start, and then in the search bar type %appdata% and press the Return key.

Mac OS X - ~/Library/iTunes/ (The tilde “~” represents your Home directory)

When in this folder look for a folder that says, iPhone Software Updates, iPad Software Updates or iPod Software updates, depending what device you are using.

If this doesn’t work try updating to iOS 7 on a different computer or by doing it over the air. To download iOS 7 directly to the iPhone or iPad go to Settings -> General -> Software Update.

Finally, if all else fails, you can simply wait a day to install iOS 7. These issues typically happen when Apple’s server is overloaded, so even if you complete all of these steps it might not work.
