2010年10月11日晚上9点30分，微软公司正式发布了智能手机操作系统Windows Phone 7，并同时宣布了首批采用Windows Phone 7的智能手机有9款，最早将于10月21日上市。
微软Windows Phone 7首先在今年2月的MWC 2010上被公布，它仍然基于Windows CE内核，但是在用户界面上相比于之前各版有了很大的改变，整体上和微软自家的Zune播放器界面类似，第三方应用程序的图标显示方式也和其它智能操作系 统的不一样。
微软称Windows Phone 7设计理念是让手机更易用，并举例说锁屏时能看到日程安排。 微软在发布会上着重介绍了Windows Phone 7的Outlook、bing(必应)地图以及Xbox Live游戏功能。
此外，对于广大用户比较关注的复制粘贴功能，微软提到将于2011年初提供。
首批推出的Windows Phone 7手机一共有九款，HTC Surround、HTC HD7、HTC 7 Trophy、HTC 7 Mozart、LG Quantum、LG Optimus 7、三星Focus、三星Omnia 7、戴尔Venue Pro。此外还公布了一款将于2011年推出的CDMA机型HTC 7 Pro。它们的屏幕分辨率均为800*480像素。
Windows Phone 7将首先在30个国家上市。在欧洲和亚洲，采用Windows Phone 7操作系统的手机将于10月21日上市，在美国上市日期则为11月8日。
