how to install fcitx input way in slackware 9.1?

i already install all 2CDs slackware , and download & install fcitx (make , make install )
but , when i input command in Terminal: fcitx &
the fcitx just can appear but not can change into input way!

how can i do ?

i already read some of tips , but stall not know how to do it
pls , step by step ,

First change your locale to zh_CN.GBK,
then edit file .xinitrc in your home dir.
Add
export XMODIFIERS=@im=fcitx
fcitx &
That's all,restart your xwindow.

Some more:
1.Run qtconfig and change the option xim to over the spot.
2.export GTK_IM_MODULE=xim

Hi, I got same problem, please, step by step. ( I still using search)

First, newbie question: How to change locale ? edit which file?
I want use the English menu, do not want to use Chinese menu

Second, I use GNOME,
shall I use
1.Run qtconfig and change the option xim to over the spot.
???

2.export GTK_IM_MODULE=xim
put this line to where? .xinitrc?

by the way, I have installed taiwan friend's firefly XF86 package, so i can see chinese using mozilla1.5+XFT

我装时发现必须要先在Gnome启动，然后才正常，不知何故？

Could you kindly explain the use of these two settings?
I suppose first one is only for KDE. Second one is for applications using GTK?

第一个正如你所讲，是用于kde的，是用来设置输入风格的。XIM 的输入风格共有四种: on the spot, over the spot, off the spot, root window, "on the spot" 是在Client软件的当前输入处输入, "over the spot" 是在当前输入处之上有一预编辑窗口提供输入, "off the spot" 是在输入窗口的下方提供预编辑取和输入状态显示区, "root window" 是在独立于输入软件的窗口中(该窗口为根窗口的子窗口)输入。
第二个是用于gnome的。gnome本身也自带有很多输入法，但是遗憾的是没有中文输入法，所以它支持其他方式输入，比如XIM，就可以通过指GTK_IM_MODULE=xim使用。

scim有一个gnome的immodule，就能够提供gnome的输入模块。该模块可以使用scim中安装的任何输入法。
