Why the slackware occupy so much memory?

sorry I've to use English b'cos I've not config the fcitx correctly.
A smalll question:
I use windowmaker, there there's a menu called process info. I opened and find these:
Mem: 514556k av, 23838k used, 276172k free

why so much memory is used.
I only start a x, and window maker and mozilla browser. and also I have complied the kernel (2.6.2) already.

following r part of the detal:

1. mozilla is extremely hungry at memory.
2. the memory usage is not accurate. linux kernel tends to keep as more memory as buffer cache so that you get much better performance than windows/bsd in many cases. when the kernel finds there's no more free memory, it will free up buffer caches. so don't worry about the memory usage. you can check the size of buffer and cached in the output of command `free'.

i think using zhcon+lynx will use less memory

我装slackware是想等我操作熟练以后，把它作为开发平台，装上oracle等大软件。所以，我连gnome,kde都不敢装。嗯，那个browser比较省，好像netscape也不小。

links不错，感觉比lynx好用

I installed slackware9.1 on IBM ThinkPad 600e(pII366),
and use FVWM, it occupies less memory, and run fast,
very good.

Gnome and Kde both occupy so many memory, and not
stable.
