欧盟一小撮阴险的政客，那些大商业软件公司的代言人，蓄谋已久，欲设立新的软件专利法案，肆意扩大软件专利的概念范畴。一旦通过该法案，任何类似 GPL 的版权认证在欧盟范围内都将丧失保护作用，任何基于现有其他软件的继承开发工作都将是非法的，后果不堪设想。不知我的理解是否正确。现在几乎所有开源软件网站的首页都在醒目位置刊登了有关抗议内容。

On September 1st the European Commission is going to vote a revised version of the European Patentability rules. The proposed revision contains a set of serious challenges to Open Source development since regulation regarding software patents will be broadly extended and might forbid independent development of innovative (Open Source and not) software-based solutions.

The European Open Source community is very concerned about the upcoming new regulation and has organized a demo protest for August 27, asking Open Source supporting sites to change their home pages to let everyone know what is going on at the European Parliament. The Apache Software Foundation has decided to support this initiative, and this is why you are seeing this page.

Due to Software Patents, this website is not running anymore!
Due to the directive validating Software Patents that will be voted this 1st of September at the European Parliament, we have decided to protest. Please close your websites too!

We support the real demonstration that took place in Brussels on Wednesday, the 27th of August. The rally started around noon in front of the European Parliament and was followed by a press conference inside the Parliament. If you were near Brussels, you had to be there!

Please join the online demonstrations against software patents. After doing that, you may proceed to the GIMP website... But keep in mind that the site and the program could disappear forever because of software patents.




A large number of active GIMP developers are living and working in Europe. The proposed changes to the European laws would put these developers at risk of being sued or threatened by companies who may hold patents that have been harmless so far (and unknown to the developers). Software patents are too easy to get and impede innovation instead of promoting it. You can read why in this well-written critique. Several studies have shown that software patents are bad for the economy in general, and could be a disaster for Free Software.

Protest against software patents

Due to the directive validating Software Patents that will be voted on at the European Parliament on September 1st, we have decided to protest.

Citizens whose nations are part of the European Parliament -- please support the real demonstration that will take place in Brussels this Wednesday 27th of August.
