mysql root 权限消失

今天第一次用 MYSQL administrator 工作，系统是 ubuntu 10.10.
我输入了root的密码进入工具，但是点 User Administration 时 提示“Could not retrieve user privilege information.”，网上找了资料，说是 root 权限不够。
我又点 Service control 》 stop the server ,提示 
“Invalid password

Could not execute the requested command.” （与登录中输的同一个密码）

另外，我查看了自已的 /var/lib/mysql 目录，发现里面没有 mysql 文件。


请问我这个问题怎么办？
