many DVDs want to Back up - external Hard disc???

want to back up around 700 DVDs Data

buy external hard disk?

行RAID, 如果有实质3T data, 是否即是要买6T external hard 行RAID?

any good suggestion?

I know RAID, many different modes, which one is suitable??

Each DVD is ~4GB, 700DVD x4GB = ~2.8TB data

I don't worry about the storage, I am more worry about the backup solution for this 3TB+ data.

And no one buy hdd these days... I mean NAS is even better, any tablet/smartphone/laptop/desktop can also access it wirelessly or within the same network.

Is that safe? that means the data will put in the public but with password??
Thunderbolt drive for back up - no body use it anymore??

Synology is a file sharing device, like Windows file sharing server but much cheaper.

I am from NY so some other "ching" from hk should able to tell you where you can buy that.

Find out which model you are interested first.It is safe, you still need to setup the account to access it, play with the demo.

I would not use thunderbolt for backup because of the price...
I am using Synology ds110j-2TB single hdd with 1.5TB 2.5" hdd usb 2.0 for backup daily.

Why not go for 4TB or 8TB(raid0)?

3TB hdd is just ~20% cheaper than 4TB.

Don't use the word "download", streaming is the correct term.

I could stream between 15-30MB/sec with AC, even N is 15-20MB/sec.

Of course TB is faster but if I could stream 5GB movie without any problem, why do I have to worry about the DVD? And you are gonna rip that to 1GB or less file format, right?

如果只是 Backup or playback DVD，根本用不著 RAID
RAID 0 - 快，但无镜象备份，播放 720p or 1080p 用返一般USB hdd or NAS 足够
RAID 1 - 有镜象备份，但已固定了的 movie files 无乜需要。加只 USB HDD 手动 or TM backup 算啦。

Thunderbolt - 单硬碟快唔得过正宗 USB 3.0。双碟 RAID 0 (或以上) 才能展示频阔威力。
Daisy Chain 一拖五，也是卖点。
TB storage 一般用作开机碟，or 外置video editing, iPhoto/Aperture/iTunes library

又 : RAID 严格上不是 backup (no history, no previous records)
又 : RAID 0 on USB 3.0 只是白花银纸。发觉 99.45% USB 3.0 storage/hub 只提及最高理论速度 (max 5G)，而非本机实速

So what way will be the best you would suggest?

as I said I have 3T volume to backup, actually they are not just Video DVDs, but some other documents like PDF, photos, wave (music) etc

6T external HDD Thunderbolt in RAID 1 (mirror) as security by using Duo Disk for example.

Is it safe and fast enough?

any other better suggestions?

RAID 1 itself is not fast at all.
Security - depends on your definition. RAID 1 gives you the most update mirror copy ( Disk B is exactly same as Disk A), but no previous records.

Thunderbolt RAID enclosure (say, 3T+3T in RAID 1 config) is quite expensive ($/GB). For example, Lacie 2Big Thunderbolt 6TB costs about $5,200.
2 separate USB disks (say, a 3T for storage, and a 4T for Time Machine) is much cheaper.

If money is the least concern, then go for Promise R4 (2TB x 4) in RAID 10 config + another 4TB USB disk for extra backup. Then it will be very fast and very secure.

I believe NAS well suit your need, though I don't own any at home. You need flexibility rather than ultimate speed.
Tell us yr budget, other ching would recommend a 4-bay Synology and backup solution.

OK, let's talk for NAS

I have a 2T HDD for time machine already, my iMac 3T Fusion drive

so, how large I need to buy for the NAS? e.g. I got 3T data, just 3T?
I watched the video clips for the setting up of NAS, I need to have another external HDD for backup (security) every day???

Can you suggest any brand of NAS HERE? Synology can be found in SSP Golden or special shop?
