MacBook Pro 2013 vs MacBook Air 2013

If I'm looking to buy 13", then would I be a fool not to buy the latest MacBook Pro?

If I'm just using that for normal use (browsing webpages, watching YouTube, typing word document etc), which one is better in performance and durability?

If I get the pro, then is it enough not to have any upgrade for use of about 3 years?

If I get the air, then I plan to upgrade to 8gb ram. Is it wise for me to do that?

Thanks.

Performance, pro is always better than air.
But please consider do you need such performance.

Take maverick as an example, even 2007 device can upgrade. So i dun think the durability is a problem.

8GB ram is a must if budget allows.

Thanks for your comment.

The only concern I have is the speed. I am really looking for a fast efficient laptop. And I know the longer lasting battery on air is at the expense of the retina display. Any thoughts on that?

As for the speed that you are looking for "normal use (browsing webpages, watching YouTube, typing word document etc)"

They both can do a good job about that, because it is mostly base on the SSD and ram.

As for durability... it is all about the user and luck.

If you are going for Air, 8GB ram and 256GB is a must.

If I'm going with pro, can I not do any upgrade (working on a tight budget) and expect it to perform well for a couple of years?

I think that one is still self-upgradable for RAM and SSD.

I would rather go for Retina if you are looking for long term, I do understand about the budget...

But if you are getting the MBP 1199 + RAM ($100) + SSD($200 for 256GB), it will be same as the mid-lvl of MBPr($1499), right?

Moreover, that MBP will get retire soon...

I used to have same struggling as you do. I finally made decision yesterday to buy 4G MBA at 256G SSD.
I am using it now. It's so fast and smooth.
I bought this case to protect it to make it more durable.

I think 1 more refresh, the current mbp will be off the shelf because the retina version gets cheaper right?

I got the same problem,
tight budget and normal use only
I calculated, if i buy MPA + 8 gb ram is $9xxx and the $9xxx MBPR seems more worth to buy
but the $9k MBPR + 8gb ram is $10xxx, now the $11488 MBPR seems more worth again...................
loop x 10000
so any suggestions which model is the best for us under this purpose?

After reading some reviews and comments here, I'm going for the MacBook Pro 2013 with no upgrade to try it out first. It's my first experience. So I think I'm not gonna upgrade too much of the spec considering its mainly for normal use.

non-retina?? dont have SSD!

If just normal use, I would consider battery life, weight as my priority.
That's why I pick MBA. SSD is helping fast operating time than CPU upgrade if you are using the notebook for day to day normal work.
if you are really budget buy, you may keep SSD as 128 G but using external hard driver later on.
